Yes, I agree with Bryan, the "valleys" MUST be painted in body color and not generic black.
I guy I saw used the tape method you mentioned. He cut long strips of tape and painted them to match and them put them on the side grilles. The result was top notch. Best.

We had a set of NOS side grilles for 1941, and they were painted black. I suspect if you see any original car (other than black) with black side grilles, it may be due to them being replaced with factory NOS items.
