mine is delco for sure, tag is there. the one from Mike did not have a tag, so i cannot confirm it is delco. but i only needed it for the end plate on the front, not those pictured. those are identical between the two in that respect.
i'll probably use the body and end plate on my original one off the car. just wondered what the difference was....55 vs 56 maybe? also mine had the extra blade on the fan, might as well keep that, gonna have to straighten the blades up though. other then the end plate and the fan, they look the same to me. Hank,
The CE plate with the "thingy" is an oil resivior (sp.?) for the bearing/bushing. They are both Delco. Both should have a felt running from the oiler cap through a cut in the bearing/bushing. If you want to upgrade the CE plate get one that has a ball bearing. This way the generator armature is supported by two ball bearings instead of one and a bushing. These were used on the heavy duty units, but will fit your generator. Good to hear from you again. (o[]o)

i did not see felt on either one of the end plates, so they must have rotted away or were removed.
please elaborate on the ball bearing end plate while i try to google that. do you know where these can be obtained? thanks, Hank

Henry,
My comments about a ball bearing CE housing are from recall. I remember seeing heavy duty Delco generators with them in the early '60s, right before alternators were fitted. I would go to a good auto electric shop and ask about it. (o[]o)

yes there is a conversion for ball bearing....Jason does not recommend in his experience.
more to come as i found a shop local that does classic gen/starter repairs and i'm still working with Jason as well. trying to find good pricing as i'm on a super crazy budget with the nursing school for my wife. i must say though that Jason with aerrebuild.com has been nothing but very kind and has offered all his expertise without grumble. here are some more pictures. Jason says the one needs rewinding and the other the CE needs to be redone but is usable. the starter just needs cleaned and re-varnished. Hank

Love your blog, and the car..., in fact I have a '55 constellation on its way (in the next month or so) from a forum member..., "free to a good home" as it were. Guess I will have to start again and reread all 118 pages!!

Henry,
Don't know why the recommendation on not using a CE ball bearing, but he must know something we don't know. Here is a suggestion. Go down to your favorite auto supply store and buy a suitable rebuilt Delco 12-volt generator. Then, take it home and disassemble it and do your magic in refinishing. It will have a new bearing and bushing and brush set. The armature will have been reconditioned and likewise the field coils. This should satisfy all your needs and wants in an affordable way. What do you think? You could do the same with a starter. (o[]o)
