Great work, Hank! Now I know where to get my pump repaired.

Wait a minute... my '48 doesn't have power steering!!!

Hank, do you have a brand name or more description for your degreaser. All I see is
Quote:
my nasty looking cocktail of grease and purple power degreaser
I find I am now in need of a good product to soak an old grease caked spare pump and wasn't that thrilled with the last stuff I bought.

Hint for others: If you see drips under the car don't assume they are coming from the power cylinder. Investigate!! I had noticed a few drops over the last few weeks and didn't pay them that much mind. Rarely used power cylinders are known to drip occasionally as this one has. Surprise! I went out to the garage yesterday and found almost a reservoir full of fluid on the floor. Appears to be from the pump so can't wait to see what catastrophic failure caused that.

its called Purple Power. you can get it at Autozone, Lowes, etc.. i got a big plastic bin from walmart and poured two huge jugs of that stuff in, don't water it down.

it WILL eat up aluminum, but only if you leave it in there....you can use it to clean aluminum, just get it off after your done.

i have soaked steel parts for months on end and no problems and no rusting.

put the pump in for a day and the crude will wipe off....leave in longer and it will be even better. 2 days and you will be able to push the grease off by hand and it will be all sludgy and settle in the bottom of the bin.

i haven't changed my cocktail, i just keep adding Purple Power too it to make it strong again.

i left my timing chain in it for over 6 months....came out looking brand new.

since its full concentrate...WEAR GLOVES! it will eat your hands right up and burn.

Thanks. Found it at Lowes and will give it a try after I clean my old HF parts tank -- although on second thought, that tank was for solvent and this stuff may not like the paint.

Hank, Is the rebuild kit you had from Max? If not, whose? If Max's, it appears to have been changed and I'm not too happy with his current version.

For anyone contemplating Max's kit (as of 2 weeks ago), The flat O ring for the body separation Hank shows in the kit in post 14 of this thread apparently has been changed to round. This one is 2 1/4 ID instead of 2 3/8 or 2 7/16 & doesn't fit. Here is a comparison shot with a ring from a dried out long ago kit I had on hand.

Not going to make an issue & will just buy another locally but anyone else be aware of this little issue. Everything else in the kit is decent.
