i started taking Kevin's steering pump apart last night. that lid sure was welded shut with all the gunk. had to heat up the rim to get it to finally pry off without damaging it.
you can see the filter has been there for a very long time...its all rubbed down on the side that was sitting towards the pump, even rubbed through the metal cage. i have it soaking in my nasty looking cocktail of grease and purple power degreaser. stuff works a charm, but looks gross. one day in that stuff and the grease and dirt will wipe right off. i'll probably keep it in there the next couple of days. although fyi...one could leave the part in there for a very long time without it rusting. i had my timing chain in that stuff for over 6 months and it came out looking like brand new. more to come Hank

enter gusha......
i took it out of the brew yesterday when i got home to flip it over. i tested the dirt and grim with my thumb...it wiped right off down to the metal. could even see some of the original black paint. after today it should be ready for a good rinsing at which point the gunk will just slosh off. i have ordered the rebuild kit and will start soon. actually i was thinking you would more put smoke around it too make it look like a witch's brew, but either way still funny.
i finally had some time yesterady to start taking the pump apart. as you can see my "brew" pretty much makes waste of anything built up on the part for 60 years. even maintained most of the original black paint on the reseviour. Kevin...i have to say this has to be one clean pump. the bushings are so beautiful and clean. i don't think this unit was used much and was maintained very well. even the rotor unit was beautiful. as to that big clip that holds the bearing and shaft in....what a joke. this is only the second one i've seen and both were worn down from the bearing rubbing. this clip wont keep the bearing in place and thus, i believe will wear out the housing eventually. the new clip i used on mine and will use on this one will not allow that to happen. i put the parts back into the dunk tank to clean out all the holes and and the such. the rebuild kit should be here today and i will go from there. also know...some of my blood is in this one....next will be my sweat and tears. enjoy. Hank, I sent you a beautiful pump ? (some one must have switched them as I sent you a greasy-mess hunk of metal!) Sorry that a blood donation was required .......was there any kind of assault involved? Your pictures are so helpful and I remain very thankful that you undertook this rebuild. Stay safe dear Packard friend!

my only guess is to facilitate the flow of the fluid while the rotor mechanism rotates. those recessed portions are on both halves of the body of the pump, right where the rotor spins.
