Attached are two photo's, one of my recently acquired Super Clipper 7 passenger engine bay, and one of another Super Clipper engine bay. I'm interested in that my car is missing the "tube" above the oil filter between the fan and oil filler.

What purpose does this tube do and where can I find one to get my car more correct.

Thanks

Lyndon

One of the first mentions of the tube is in conjunction with sticking valves and changes to the oil filler tube and cap to provide better ventilation to the engine internals. Feb 1, 1941 SC Vol 15 #3packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/SC/SL-VOL15NO3.pdf

Believe it was only used on the 356 engine & eliminated sometime in the 22 series. You can get a running commentary of the problem and various other things tried by looking in the service index and reading thru the many mentions of valve sticking.

Would almost have to find a parts car or engine for a Packard version but it is just a straight piece of steel tubing with a couple of flat pieces of metal welded on. The dimensions and photos can be posted if you wanted to make one.

.

No, not for cooling. The purpose of providing more air was to enhance crankcase ventilation. Thus when removing and reinstalling the oil filler tube it's important to do it such that the air intake slot in the cap faces the tube.

Checkout this on youtube, Around 7 mins, and 30 sec.;
youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=mc7-gO2TlSU&feature=endscreen

And if you would like I can follow you some measurements, and pictures. It wouldn't be that hard to make, if you can't find a replacement.

Thanks Wesley, some measurements and detailed photos would be great if you can spare the time. Obviously to get an original item would be preferred if i can find one.

Cheers

I hope this helps. The two straps measure 7 5/8 inches long, including rapping part way around the pipe.
