Thanks, Hank. I was going to order another one from Max and I think you just saved me around $15. The same Hastings item appears to be available locally at Napa as FIL 1653 for $9.
Max wants $15 plus freight for his so if I can buy one here, will cost half as much.

Weren't theses used on tractors as well. You might try taking one up to a farm / tractor supplier, and checking it out.

I don't know for sure and don't have an early pump to look at. The factory filter appears to be slightly taller than this one but Max shows the picture of the smaller height filter in his 52-4 listing. The bottom support thruout the years looks to be very similar and if the top spring will extend for the lower height, then probably so. Even if the spring doesn't extend, a spacer to make up the difference should be easily doable. I just got back from Napa and filter was available. Round numbers, $11 and it found a new home. It cost a few dollars more than the ones Hank linked. When you figure freight and wait time, well worth it and maybe without freight even a bit cheaper than the other places. The Hastings and Wix are the same as Napa 1653.

I don't recall the details and I'm not at my shop to check where I have several pumps in each style but there were two different pumps in '52-'54. One was quite tall; the other looked more like that used on the '55-'56 models.
Update: I just came across this in my notes and don't know how accurate it is: 1955-1956 Power steering pump filter: O.D.: 3 3/16 (81.0) I.D.: 1 1/16 (27.0) Length: 1 9/16 (39.7) Napa FIL 1653 Hastings HF783 Case A22279 International 133205-R91 Baldwin P183 The 52-54 filter element is 2 1/2" tall
