Thank you JW! You have just solved a mystery on my 288cid '51 200 Deluxe! I believe it recieved a Service Engine transplant in '55 which means it has hydraulic lifters. It had noisey valve lifters when I got it and a complete valve job was done with a couple of new valves replacing burnt one. The Mystery was why when it was all put back together it had --- Noisy lifters! None of the valves were adjusted for with a OHV mindset, it was assumed that the hydraulic lifters would automatically take up any slack. If I read your post right, this simply isn't so. We checked the oil pressure in the engine which was a constant 40 psi and all the lifters were getting the right pressure so what you posted has to be the solution. I'm sorry I jumped in like this, duane.g but you can't imagine what this means to the puzzeled owner of a noisy but otherwise strong running and economical Packard with a smooth shifting Ultramatic!

Duane,
She's looking good. Always nice when you finally get them in one color. You can then really see everything clearly on the body and plan accordingly.

Been busy, found a supplier for new hydrualic lifters, Bob's Packard Parts, in Marietta, Pa. I ordered 2, so I'll have a spare used one. The mechanic will put the engine together, except for 2 valves so I can install the lifters when they come.
I painted the outside of the car white and then took the wife down to choose the color for the top and inside. Here's a couple of pictures. I need to add more paint to the top and then it'll be a lot of sanding and buffing. The interior is a tough one because I left most of it in place. This is not a frame off repair, just hoping for a nice paint job.

Looking good. I see you painted the tops of the doors to match the roof, which I think is not 'packard original' at least my clipper was not like that.
I was however considering doing exactly what you did and paint the door tops to match the roof (jade body and dark green roof)...I'm looking forward to see what it looks like when complete! keep it up. Tobs

Tobs,
I know that painting the tops of the doors is not 'original' but neither is the color. White was not an option choice for 1953, but it's what the wife wanted. After all, this is her car. It will be all original Packard drive train and every other part as I can do and find. I just found a door panel in Pennsylvania that I can use as a pattern and its trim. I am still trying to work on arm rests for all 4 doors as mine are missing or shot. I can't wait to take the tape off and start polishing it. It will look good, even if not 'Packard' colors.

Check with Ross, he may have arm rests available in his parts cache.

Duane,
I realize that Sterling passed away, but if I recall correctly, all the door panels were with the car when I sold it to him. Tom Ferran (sp) was present when he picked the car up.....maybe he remembers? I'm enjoying your progress. Can't wait to see it on the road.

Finally stole some time and pulled the tape off the 53. The easy part is done, now for the real work: wet sanding and buffing.
The mechanic said the connecting rod bearings were 20 thousandths off, so he contacted where I got them and now we wait for engine parts. I still need to do the front fenders, hood, fender skirts and bumper aprons. The inside trim was painted when I did the dashboard, roof and door tops. Wife really likes the color. And I need to fix the floors.
