If it is a late engine or had factory AC, there was another location on the right front used for numbers on some engines.

What are the chances that the engine is both original and incorrect? This car was assembled pretty late in the run and you have to wonder.....

Have to say I will envy you when done. Love mine, but is faily original. Can't even process the idea of so much work....

I'd say the chances are extremely slim to none whatsoever. Packard did make some late substitutions, like Monroe for Bendix power steering, but one thing they had no shortage of at all were motors. Thirty years later they were still being sold off new in crates.

Well unfortunately there is no Vin numbers on the front or top of the engine. I will have to wait until I pull this weekend to see if there are any numbers on back. Clearly it is Metallic Green and it is Defiantly a Carter Carb not a Rochester. Thinking more and more I got a Clipper motor installed. Other option is to pull the head and see if I have a 4" or a 4.125 bore then we will know.

I wonder why the boss would have white paint, but no stamped number? If I recall correctly, the number is stamped and then the area is painted white. Here is what the number stamping looks like on my '55 Clipper Super (320 cu. in.).

My 56 engine is not stamped real deep. maybe use a wire brush and clean it better and take another look.

You can check the bore size by looking at the casting number on top of bellhousing. NOTE: There is a question on the 320 number if the last digit in the number is a 1 or a 7.

If no numbers are found or a short number beginning with maybe an S, it is possible there was a service engine installed at some point and was painted incorrectly. In 55 they had senior service engines made but painted the wrong color. A bulletin was issued with suggestions made to correct the color but don't remember anything specific on 56.

Cleaned with solvent and brass wire bush and it seems clear that this engine had never been stamped. It does kind of look like possible bronze paint under the green in some spots. I guess I am on hold until I pull it this weekend and check the casting number.

I am down to wrong engine, right engine repainted and never stamped? or, Right engine and it is a incorrect painted service engine.

If it proves to be the 374, I can always paint to original color and stamp for matching numbers and be back in business.

Frustrating. Where was Carfax in 56
