To diagnose the problem without a tear down, I would follow the vehicle up a steep hill at high throttle and down hill with the throttle closed.
If it smokes up the hill it rings, if it smokes down the hill it's guides. There is also the potential of a leak in the vacuum pump and that line can be plugged to determine if that is the source. The guides can be tested to an extent with the valve covers off.
