The gasket between the carrier and the housing is approximately 1/32" thick.

I have pinion seal info to post. How do I post multiple pictures. I can't put in more that one in the upload line. Do I just put them up in separate posts?
EDIT 02/17/14 - Thanks Wes. Forgot I had to attach one at a time.

At the bottom is a selection [Choose File], once file is downloaded from your computer select the [Attach] button and than do the same steps for the next file. Just make sure your pictures are smaller than 2048K or it will give you an error about size to big.
Hope this helps. Wes

OK...for the pinion seal. The first picture is the seal in the seal carrier. The two bumps are from me putting in two screws to pull the seal carrier out of the diff housing and I soldered them shut. Next is the seal and felt wiper out of the seal carrier, looking at the seal carrier from the inside. Next picture I flipped the seal carrier over to show what it looks like from the outside. The felt wiper acts a dirt wiper, with the oil seal behind it. The next picture is the modern seal. I was going to install two of them back to back, to have one work as the wiper and the other as the oil seal, but there is not enough room to do this. I have asked my supplier to see if he can find a double lip seal with the same dimensions as the one in the picture. If he is unable to, I will re-install the felt, put the modern seal in as the oil seal and re-install the seal carrier in to the diff housing with a smear of gasket maker on the outside of the seal carrier. I figure this should work just fine as the pinion shaft has a slinger ring on it that covers the front of the pinion seal. I will re-post when I my supplier lets me know.

Well, here it is, a modern seal which will likely fit 48-50 axles. It's a CR seal (Chicago Rawhide). Pictures below show the seal as I assemble. I put the felt wiper back in, figured it would hurt it to be there. Sorry that some of the pictures are a bit fuzzy. I didn't realize it until after the fact. Hope this is a help to someone. I am currently working on inner and outer axle seals. Will also post that info when I get it settled.

My seal supplier has ordered me two outer and two inner seals based on the dimensions that I gave him. I will post pictures and info when I get them.

OK....here are the axle seals. First picture shows the modern seals and the part numbers. The one on the left is the inner seal and the other is the outer seal. Next two pictures show the original inner seal. It got a bit beat up getting it out. The second picture is the inside of the seal. The next picture shows the outer leather seal in the holder and one out. The next picture shows how the outer seal is retained in the housing. There are 4 of the small bumps that hold the metal ring that is the keeper for the leather seal and the next picture shows the bumps with the retainer and leather ring removed. To allow the modern seal to be pressed in to the housing, I had to flatten out the bumps, shown in the next two pictures. I used a small drift punch, gently clamped the housing in my vice and dollied the bump until flat. I then used some pieces of metal, squared the seal to the housing and gently pressed the seal in to the housing using my vice as a press, shown in the next picture. The last three pictures show the modern outer seal pressed in to the housing. I have not installed the inner seals as this is in preparation to installing a 3.9 gear set out of a spare rear axle in to my car and installing a better axle, as I have one that has a damaged taper.

Finally got to do the gear swap. Had an issue that needs to be passed on. The outer seal that is pictured in the last two pictures above will have to be modified after installation in the seal retainer. When setting the axle end play, it didn't matter what shims were used, it would be too tight. Took some fiddling, but found the seal was the culprit. I had to use a die grinder and a burr/ rotary file and remove the lip of the seal and make it so it was flush, or a tad below the face of the holder. If you look at the second last picture, showing the inside of the seal, you will notice that it protrudes out of the housing. This part of the seal was pushing on the bearing and messing up the end play tolerance.
