Didn't make it back to the workshop on Wednesday or Thursday either, but did today. Reblasted the body of the waterpump, looks a lot better now. Found a pair of grooves worn into the bottom of the pump body, see pic's. Just wondering, how did they get there? They aren't cuts from something like a hacksaw and they certainly appear to be worn into the casting. Then started on cleaning the OD housing when John suggested putting that, the adapter and the trans housing into the hot washer, which I was all for. After that there was still some final cleaning with brake cleaner to remove the grime and buildup in the internal nooks and crannies which defied the washers cleaning attempts. Might even the deliver the parts to Wade next week as I'm likely to be up his way Monday or Tuesday.

No, this is NOT an April fool joke!

This morning did some reconnaissance for a run for our Packard National Rally in 2015. The end of which brought me in close proximity to Wade's new abode. I was about 57kms south instead of about 107kms, how close can you get? So dropped in the cleaned up trans and OD cases as well as the waterpump. For my troubles was presented with a bill for parts bought to date for the trans and OD rebuild. Reminds me, will have to follow up re the double row bearing and layshaft, haven't heard back yet from a likely source.

And this for Terry, traumjaegercat, I asked Wade about the water pump rebuilds. He remembers the incident about the incorrect machining dimension. It was because the new ceramic seal being used had changed from the previous one used. Wade used the previous measurements not knowing the manufacturer had changed the seal. And, as a bonus, Wade will dig out his drawings for the '34 Waterpump. May take a little while but once available will let you know.

Mal,
The double row bearings are getting scarse, the r-6s used two bearings and a spacer. The counter shafts are out there as they fit the standerd or OD trans. If you can't find one in OZ I have two or three.

Before Wade arrived at the workshop mid-morning I'd done the right thing by Misty and given her a bone. Then when Wade arrived it was with parts for 1) cleaning, the internals for my Trans and OD and 2) disassembling, the front suspension parts for Big Red for rebuild. And another reason for being there, was preparation of The Fossil for its trip north to its new home.

Cleaning of the Trans and OD parts was my task, as it should be. And while I was doing that Wade was fussing around The Fossil. Originally the front mudguards(US = fenders, UK = wings) were going to be attached to make the journey as a complete unit with The Fossil. But having difficulty mounting the right front 'guard meant it was returned to storage. This necessitated a washing of hands so I could help Wade carry it. Plan is to get The Fossil running so it can be driven onto and off a tilt tray tow truck. Noel even dropped in, during the cleaning processes, with a some parts for the radio Wades working on for him.

Then, after finishing cleaning of the Trans and OD internals, assisted Wade in removing the bushes and pins from the '37 Super Eight front end components. Wade had already "had a go" at home but his press wasn't making much of an impression. Tried Ricks press, a little better, and then Johns. Johns press has a two stage hydraulic action and provided much more oomph!
Part of the "pressing issue" is sourcing pieces to use of the right size, diameter, length, etc to use to push parts out or in. An assortment of solid steel cylinders, old sockets, drifts, old bearing shells, etc as well as some press specific pieces are always at hand. But finding something that is just right for the job at hand sometimes entails a further search of tool boxes, discarded parts as well as some lateral thinking and luck to come up with the right combination required. All this took time resulting in disassembly still being far from complete at days end.

Seeing Wade had stayed overnight with John I was beaten into the workshop by a good margin this morning. Once there Wade continued with the front suspension disassembly making good progress. Continued the disassembly until it was finished and then set about the reassembly process. A couple of bushes and pins were pushed in but again this necessitated securing the right pieces to be able to the job. Also entailed cleaning up of the eyes of rust and to ensure their smoothness. Then I was tasked with cleaning the partly reassembled pieces which Wade will complete on his return home. Wade also loaded up the Ute with various other parts for his trip home, some of which are likely to be on the market in the near future.

Yesterday, at the workshop, Wade dropped off more Trans and OD parts for cleaning. So spent a couple of easy hours today cleaning those parts. Think that will just about do it although when 1) the Trans to OD Adaptor, 2) the Mainshaft EDIT - Should be Countershaft and 3) the double row bearing for the OD arrive, 1) and 2) will probably need cleaning too!

"Think that will just about do it although when 1) the Trans to OD Adaptor, 2) the Mainshaft and 3) the double row bearing for the OD arrive, 1) and 2) will probably need cleaning too!"

Speaking of the Devil, the Mainshaft should be Countershaft(US) or Layshaft(Oz) arrived today while my wife and I were out in the Coupe. We were on a reconnaissance run to a Restoration Workshop about 90kms away. This in preparation for it being one of the daily run venues for our Aussie National Packard Rally next year.

Anyway, when we arrived home there was a mailing tube propped up next to the front door. Only trouble was a cap was missing from one end of the tube! Approached the tube with some trepidation, but on picking it up there was definitely weight there so relaxed. Pulled out the newspaper packing from the open end and YES, there was the Countershaft.
Looks real good, and it's all to Greg, saltydog! It will require minimal cleaning, if any, and is a much, much better shaft than the corrugated shaft it replaces!

Took the replacement countershaft to the workshop and very lightly cleaned it. Also picked up the mainshaft which had the new front bearing positioned on it. But Wade wasn't happy with the feel of the bearing once it was on the shaft. Apparently it has some drag which shouldn't be there, although to these inexperienced hands and fingers it seemed good to me. Took it over to ABC Bearings to exchange it but was told because it had been "fitted" they wouldn't exchange it! Not to worry, for the sake of $20 I bought another! Countershaft, Transmission Clutch Shaft and 2 bearings now await pickup by Wade when he's next in town. Also added the details of the replacement front and rear trans bearings to the Packard Parts X-Ref
