Got a picture of my brake return spring, far end attached to brake shaft, close end just stuck at frame opening, temporary. Can keep it there, but don't think correct.

I'll be first to admit I don't know much about 40 geometry and could be all wet. If yours is anything like later ones, I think the spring might go in the small hole next to the frame opening and I wonder if it might need to switch end for end.
Looking at the 41, can't quite tell if that is what you call a nub but if I guessed where the spring goes correctly the layout would be similar to the 47. The spring hook goes in the smaller hole and because of the angle of the X member the end sort of just follows the angle and lays against the metal. Here is my 47 and I think the way the 41 goes. If my guess is incorrect, someone please advise.

Maybe needs to be turned around, just stuck it there for illustration. Either way will probably need a shorter spring. Who has a good supply of these, these days? When I go go auto parts houses now, there is not the selection there used to be. Plus the strength, many newer ones don't seem to have much of a pull.
