My 2255 is missing all the keys. I need to get reproductions made. What are the correct keys? I have heard that the ignition locks are Briggs & Stratton. Do the keys have a special design or the Packard logo?

Briggs & Stratton locks from at least 1935 thru 1956; the key series was P1251 thru P1500 thru all those years. Most locksmiths and key shops have functional blanks but of course not duplicates of the originals with regard to branding. There are keys reproductions with Packard logo on them available though not quite like the originals, I see them occasionally on eBay but you might also try Jesser Lock.

With only 250 different keys used, borrow keys from your local Packard buddies, you might get a fit.

I had spare keys made by the local hardware store and use them daily while saving the originals. The replica keys are made by AXXESS and have a number "78" on the back.

I hope that this helps.

I add to Owen_Dyneto's posting upon the original keys, I have included a photo of the original keys that came with my 1949 Super 8 DeLuxe. I photographed both front and back sides for review.

Eric, thanks for the images, a very nice set of keys. Your keys are original B&S keys and obviously not cut from blanks, but not the original Packard keys that were supplied with your car when new, more likely a duplicate set purchased from the dealer or a locksmith. On the original keys I showed in Post #2, "Packard Motor Car Co." also appears on the flip side.

At various times Packard offered or supplied "special" keys with a more ornamental design and head; 23rd series Custom 8s were available with such keys, and I expect such special keys were often made available by dealers for other years and models. The one most commonly seen has a gold finish and the head of the key is in the shape of the Packard crest with a cast-in loop for a key ring, I have an image of that key somewhere, perhaps from an accessory catalog? Just for interest here's the special key set provided with the 54 Panthers.

Also, a bit off topic, but here's a neat little leather key fob from the late 20s. Anyone have one?

Dwight Heinmuller sells a nice key fob. He may have a line on key blanks too.

Regarding the two different types of original keys, the one with the round head is for the outside door locks and ignition, while the one with the octagonal head is for the glove box and trunk.

Thanks all for the replies. Those original 22nd series Packard keys look like filing cabinet lock keys - very plain! I'm aware that most prewar and up to the mid-50's many cars tended to use pretty spartan key designs, but I guess I expected Packard might be different.

The 23rd series Golden Anniversary keys look very nice. Even the aftermarket keys look pretty good. I could do whatever I want, but the to be authentic I'd stick with the plain-jane Packard round and octagonal keys.

Thanks for the suggestions - had noticed Jesser Lock selling some key blanks on eBay. May will check him out, or the local hardware stores for temporary replacements. I'm going to have to remove all the tumblers to get the keys cut for the locks anyway.

Hi,

I am looking to purchase key blanks for 1955 Packard Caribbean. authentic key blanks and key chains would be great, but replicas ok. I would appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Val.
