That is the way they were built.
If you can't see the cotter pins then the condition can't be inspected. Those cotter pins are there for some safety reason.

I agree with Tim.
The front engine mounting bolt has the bolt head and washer on top and nut underneath on each side. Mine is a 633 but I expect it is the same as your 526 in these areas.

Thanks for the photo. Confirms my assembly. One of the drilled bolts broke on disassembly and I cannot find a new drilled one. Guess I will have to drill one myself.
