Packards watch war

I'm sure most of us are aware that James Packard was into highly sophisticated watches. In 1916 he had the most sophisticated watch in the world made for him. This ignited a "watch war" between him and Henry Graves. Henry's next watch took 8 years to build and recently got sold at an auction for $24 million:

If you're into watches and especially the J. W. Packard collection (now sadly widely dispersed) and his ongoing "one-upsmanship" with Graves, the fairly recent book " A Grand Complication" is a very worthwhile read on the many watches made for both, many by Patek Philippe. I'm actually surprised no one has reviewed it for the Packard Bookshelf on this site.

Here's a bit more on the topic.

I think these rich kooks pay absurd money for stuff like that because they secretly despise the people who make art and get a kick out of the fact that the artist doesn't receive any benefit.

With all that money they are still so repugnant they can't even get a decent piece of skin.

Or, they have finally achieved the means to enjoy the finest things. Nothing wrong with that.
