If I understand what you described, the car is not physically in reverse but the incline and gravity would want to spin the OD gears in reverse so with the sun gear locked the overrunning clutch would lock up and prevent backward motion??

Quote from post #10 above:
" In reverse with overdrive engaged the sprag
.... Since youcan't be intwo ratios simultaneously the unit will lock
up."

Note that it says In REVERSE. Not low gear.

Ok. BUT, the basic concept of a hill holder is to hold a car that is pointed UP hill and assumed to be taking off UP hill in a FORWARD gear (low gear) not reverse.

VAPOR LOCK demystified: See paragraph SEVEN of PMCC documentaion as listed in post #11 of the following thread:f

Also note that ANY and ALL gears, WHERESOEVER located in the drive train will have the same load on them in reverse as would occur under DEceleration in any forward gear at aany speed..

Of course a sprag could uncouple any load depending on where the sprag is located but create any backloaad.

wonder if the intent of the wiring change would be to disable the free wheeling thus the car would use engine braking rather than free wheel as can be accomplished before OD is engaged

Note: I do not believe the Rein unit above is a Packard Approved Accessory, i.e. NOT in the Packard parts book or accessory brochures. If It is, please show me.

Note: This Rein unit is currently listed on ebait from that same Montville, NJ vendor.

That is an interesting hill holder. Wonder if that particular unit was ever an official Packard offering like the No-Rol unit or just by dealer. It would appear if desired you could use it on the downside of a hill (not sure why you would need to) whereas the other type only works if the car is pointing uphill, Not sure the exposed wires held to the steering column by "colorless Scotch tape" was quite to Packard standards though. I think the full automatic never see it operation of the No-Rol is more to Packards DNA.

EDIT: I'd bet Flackmaster is correct about it not being an official offering. I've also never seen or heard of that type being on a Packard before.

I just remembered a thread from a couple of years ago. The poster asked a question about some kind of gadget he found on his car attached to the master. The car had been modified in several other areas too. The way he described the item it sounded like a No-Rol but then he went farther and said he didn't see any clutch connection and it might have had wires. The guess at that time because of the other mods was it was some kind of early brake release for racing. Now I wonder -- although it would seem this Rein unit could certainly be used for that particular brake holding purpose too.

What I said in my post about the hillbilly hillholder is "that is the operating principle behind the hillbilly hillholder."

In other words the overdrive will not turn backwards when engaged.

In reverse the annulus has to turn backwards so the overdrive must be disengaged for the car to roll backwards.

So you can test my assertion by using a jumper wire to override the reverse lock out switch, accelerate to 22-25 mph in reverse, throw it in neutral, and take your foot off the accelerator.

If the trans doesn't blow up you can come back here and tell me I'm wrong.

Of course the posted picture is very small and only looks like they are doing something with the overdrive. The text is too small so I can only guess what they are trying to do. Maybe it's just the same gadget as in the other pictures.

Re: Hill Holder for BW OD Cars

I couldn't read the thumbnail JW posted either so found the actual July 54 article in the Pop Mechanics archive and posted a link to it in post 6 of this thread if you want to read the original.
