I recently drove a 1939 Twelve Formal Sedan with the column shift. It had positive movement with no slop and easy to use. Sorry, no photos.

OD,
I too then am half wrong. My statement of the 39 sales brochure came from my copy of the Six / 120 literature, not the more comprehensive salesman book.
Glad to know the truth now.

I grew up driving the Old Man's 1950 Chevy with "three on the tree".

It had developed a problem where when shifting from first to second the linkage would lock up in first gear with the shift lever suck in neutral.

The only way to fix it was to park the car still stuck in low gear, turn off the engine and open the hood and pull up the low linkage.

It always did this at the least convienant time.
