On another thread there was mention of possibly 3 different hood emblem treatments used in 56 all with the same part number. Another poster had questioned if there was a gold version and also an all chrome version since he had seen both.
Can't tell where the gold stops in that photo but a NOS emblem I bought has a light pale gold top half. The knights head and edge outline around the shield are chrome. The patterns and small squares inside the red background is more interesting. I have one emblem where they all appear gold and another where the four large patterned areas look gold but small vertical and horizontal squares look more chrome.

I've got a friend who has studied all the postwar Packard crests extensively. With regard to the 1956 6478517 he has 3 or 4 all still in original Packard paper wrapping and all have the gold above the helmet and on the features surrounded by the cloisonn?, just as pictured in Troy's photo. It's his belief that this with the gold was the one and only factory-supplied emblem and those that don't have the gold have simply lost it as a result of the very thin gold washing off over time. He also indicates that there was a body shop service part substitute (PMCC or perhas aftermarket?), under the same part number, that used red anodized alumina or enamel instead of the cloisonn?. I've seen at least one of these; perhaps there was an interim style without the gold?. To some extent still a bit of a mystery, no authoritative documentation on all of this, just the opinion of one who has studied it over the years.
