Heeelp! I can't get my parking brake to stay on. I pull out the handle, but the brake won't stay applied. The handle just springs back in. I painted part 1.136 with por15, so perhpas the teeth are not as sharp as they should be and that is why the hook mechanism is not holding onto a tooth? Also what is spring 1.1045, where does it go?. The only other potential thing is that I have the handle in upside down? Which way should one twist the grip to release the brake? Counter clockwise IIRC.

That helps a lot! I have a box of assorted springs, so I will try and make something up to match the new helpful information. You guys are great!
Dave, is your photo from one of the usual vendors? Guess I could make my own spring for the short term and order a proper one for long term.
-Before I restored the car there were no springs here....I put one on and it got worse! Hope both springs will be better.

No, I took that photo myself while I was contemplating having to make an extra one for a friend. Didn't need to, obtained one from either Mike Dulinski or Joel Ray. It's the spring that rotates the handle back to horizontal after release.

I'll see what I can come up with here from my stash tomorrow in the AM. I'm beginning to think I need to beef up the spring that I have already on there, and adding this second spring to rotate the lever back should also help. I'll also lube the mechanism some. That can't hurt either. Trying to focus on items that are relevant for safety inspection soon.

Didn't have time to get under the hood this morning...but did find a few minutes to cut a rubber foot so I can screw on my side view mirror without scratching the paint on my driver's door. I know it's not the correct Packard mirror, but is at least period correct, cheap and works just fine.

Regarding that odd little spring for the parking brake, if you aren't successful in find one or modifying something to fit, you might try making your own. Attached is a very nice little process for making small springs - I've used this general procedure myself for making some and usually by the 3rd or 4th try I've got a useful part.

Got a lot more done over the weekend. I borrowed a 1 1/2 inch socket and tightened the axle to brake drum nuts and put in a cotter pin. Since I didn't have a torque wrench that used a 3/4 drive I converted the torque spec to metric units (Newton Meters), and then used a 1 meter long moment arm, and applied (I think 28 kilograms) force while standing on my bathroom scale!
I roughly aligned the toe using strings from the rear wheels to the front and measuring distance to the rims.
Since everything seemed to be together, I cranked the engine for a few sconds in the accessory position (No voltage to the coil) to build up oil pressure, then started the engine! Woo hoo, engine runs again quite well. I let her warm up, and took a ride around the block! First time in about 5 years that the car has moved under its own power!!!! Three forward gears, reverse, brakes and parking brake are working.
I have a little bit of brake fluid leaking at the MC I need to check out. There also seems to be oil leaking from the clutch inspection cover.....That is very ominous, and I hope my rear main seal is not screwed up. That would be a kick in the nose for a freshly rebuilt engine....Cross your fingers for me that I don't have to pull the engine and trans again

Here is a pic of the battery hold down my father inlaw made for me. The packard one didn't fit on the 72 amp hour battery I bought here....-insulated with rubber to avoid any direct shorts across the battery and also isolate vibration.
It was a milestone this weekend driving again, but I still have a lot of work to do!
