Some photos of the engine compartment. I plan on having a lot of fun with this project.

I like original cars but I've to admit that the way the hood opens is very stylish. I like it.

Not only stylish but functional and a lot more convenient than the side opening hoods that seemed to be the style postwar. Wonder if it was another Packard first with the 41 Clipper or did other prewar cars use them. IMO, even the conventional body small side opening lift ups are easier to work with. Space may be limited with the lift ups but at least you can raise both sides at the same time.

One of the annoyances of those fully removable later side opening hoods is having to open one side, do work, close and lock it then go around and reach inside the car to release the other side and then raise it. Gets to be a real pain if you are by yourself and unable to remove the hood for complete access yet need to work on both sides of the engine.

Yes I really like this mod they did, I've never had to work on one with the side to side lift but it defenitly looks like a pain to deal with if your doing a lot of engine work.

The only problem with it is I have to re weld a cracked part of the frame they made and it can use a little stronger shocks.

Packrat48, I love the hood too but just realized that you're in my hometown of Vallejo where I was born a few years after your car was built!

Well I've gotten a little work done on her, been trying to figure out this damn OD. Got underneath and disconnected the OD cable and was able to lock it in and tie back and is working a lot better. The cable is corroded together so gonna try a soak it free.
A big thanks to Dell for rebuilding a OD lockout switch so I installed that but just to find a blown fuse so gonna get some fuses today and get that finished up.

Just a reminder that Packard and some other auto mfgs of that period used SFE type fuses. The SFE fuses all have the same 1/4" diameter but are different lengths depending on amp rating. As an example, the holder in the photo appears original. If so, the OD calls for an SFE 30 which has a length of 1 7/16". The Electromatic on the other hand calls for an SFE 9 and that fuse would have a length of 7/8".

Point being modern type easily available glass fuses are usually 1 1/4" long and will not fit in most of the original holders. Unless the holders have been changed you will have to source the proper fuses or wind up changing holders to modern. NAPA carries SFE fuses as probably do other parts stores.
