90's in Chicagoland for the next 5 days!
A/C I have all the parts, just need to put it together. Ultramatic is still hanging on, and the rebuild is still in 4 different totes.

The convertibles or power window equipped cars had the hydraulic pump on the firewall. When they went with the washer with coordinator combo for 54 the coordinator ran smack into the bracket holding the pump. Guess they figured it was easier to tilt the motor and have the coordinator fit in the space just below the bracket rather than redesign or relocate the pump or bracket.
Here is a photo of the pump with a GM electric motor conversion but you can still see what the issue would be with the stock setup.

All of the vacuum hoses arrived from Summit Racing, so now I have to dig out the coordinator from storage and hope it even works. It was one I found in Dan Yocum's shed many years ago.

From this recommendation I installed the helper springs on my 1953 Cavalier, to correct the very slight sag I was experiencing. Worked wonders! Thanks.

Well, finally getting back to work on the transmission. I dragged all the bins from the basement that contained my disassembled '56 trans and GS bell-housing and oil pan.
First order of business was replacing the clutch pack bushing, so got an A-frame hydraulic press from HF, and race/seal installing kit. I used a depth gauge to measure how far the bushing was down from the inside edge of the clutch pack housing I used a screwdriver to pry the edge of the old bushing inwards, to collapse it and then was able to just put the old one right out. You can see the difference in thickness between the old and new bushings. So for sure, the old was worn. I coated the new bushing and the bore with a little ATF, and then pressed it in to the same depth. Gave it a little more ATF on the inside of the bushing and the set it over the front pump to make sure there was no binding on the thicker bushing. Spins like a top with no slop. I had bought another clutch facing disc to "fill-up" the clutch pack to make up the difference between the new flat style discs and the old wavy discs. But with an extra steel and facing in, the pack was too tight. So I omitted the extra facing disc and double up two of the steels together to take up the spacing in the stack. This gives me enough space so I can turn the input shaft with one hand.

I pretty much have the front pump, rear pump, and planetary assemblies squared away. Two questions:
If you look at the picture of below of the planetary bushing, the original bushing has an oil groove in it. The replacement bushing does not. Was this a change? or did I receive the wrong style bushing? Another question on the rear pump gear, I failed to take a picture on disassembly, and I can't tell which way the small gear goes in. Picture A shows the with the inner drive teeth level with the gear surface, picture B shows with inner drive teeth inset. Looking at the service manual, it appears to be A (kinda grainy and hard to tell), but I can see where B made more sense the little piece that rides in there to set.

Well, it looks like I may have an answer to one of the questions in SC 28, no. 14.
Looks like I was sent the 54 (non-gs) and prior bushing (410861) instead of the 54 GS and later one (458923 ) I found this in one of the service letters. I don't see another one listed for 56, so I assume the 458923 bushing is the correct one for a later 56 transmission. I'll have to contact Kanter and see if they will swap it out. Hopefully, no one else got the wrong one. Attach file: (7.56 KB)
