They changed front lower shock mounting between 55-56. Don't remember ever reading the why but maybe something in conjunction with the 56 revision of the TL front load link geometry. As shown in this post there are adapters to allow the use of the different type shocks.

Thanks for that info... talk about a company waisting money.
Talk about be going nuts,, thought everyone else was wrong Hahaha Well the Monroe Matic 5801 work fine... the ones that are on the car, came with the car when I bought it back in the 80's... guess I could just make a plate drill 3 holes and there I go.. Thanks again Best Dave

There is an adapter available to allow the single stud on bottom to be mounted on the 56. I pictured it here some time ago.

Since the Monroe Matic (5801) has nearly the same specs as the KYB and it has the bar at the bottom with the 2 bolt support.. why do any extra work Best

But from my point of view, the monroe is the correct way to go, because it is the way the Packard lower mount is designed. and also because I'm Lazy. Best
