Assuming the 40 uses the same specs as 47, it is 130-150

Nope. It is from the engine section of the 46-50 service manual. As O_D said, prewar Packard didn't seem to worry about torque specs much but did start putting more info and some charts in the postwar manuals.

New issue. My son is a perfectionist, self derived.

He says there is something wrong with the bell housing cover assembly.

The parts book identifies this as a Borg& Beck Left hand drive clutch

The cover plate has a cover plate anti-rattle spring,
a cover plate eye-bolt and nut,
a cover plate eye-bolt pin.

There are pictures of the clutch int he book, but nothing showing the above items.

Here's a picture of what I had, before we took it apart and which he says cannot be correct.

All it has to do is pull the throwout bearing away from the clutch fingers. Looks like what is there will do that. Later cars had an eye cast onto the front bearing retainer to serve the same purpose of hooking the spring.

Could be thinking of someone elses car but seem to remember your 356 engine was from a later year. If it is and also had the later bellhousing, instead of a cast eye for the spring end those had an ordinary clevis pin which varied by year. 3/16 dia x approx 3/8" long to just under 1/2" long inserted into a hole in the bellhousing. The spring loop went in the clevis hole instead of a cotter pin and the head kept the pin from pulling thru. Trans mounting flange was positioned over the head to prevent it from falling out if the spring became disconnected. I was able to find a 1/2" long clevis pin at a hardware store for the 47.

Thanks, again, Howard.

Ordered pins from McMaster Carr. 3/16" dam. We'll add a washer if the 5/16th head isn't big enough diameter. That will also shorten the length to under 1/2".

Also a boot and linkage clips from John Ulrich. I couldn't find the boot spring (John sold what stock he had).

Where on the oil pump do we look for the "punch mark" that should be on top when installing oil pump into engine? We know the slot should be parallel to the cam shaft.
