Should I use a a gasket sealer in addition to the valve cover gaskets to prevent leakage?

It certainly isn't necessary to use a sealer as long as the covers are in good condition (not bent, warped, or the bolt holes stretched and elongated (if so, flatten them back). That said, my preference is to use a shellac or Permatex (NOT silicone) product between the gasket and the cover, and just a very thin layer of grease between the gasket and the cylinder head. In that manner if you must remove the covers within a reasonable amount of time you probably won't have to replace the gaskets.

I've been a fan of Copper Coat Gasket Compound for years. But I only use it on the rocker cover side of the gasket.
