Differential noise does not necessarily mean you need a new ring and pinion. And setting up ring and pinion tooth contact, bearing preloads, etc. is somewhat specialized work. Unless you're skilled in such work I suggezt you have a competent mechanic evaluate the needs.

Definitely not DIY unless you know what you are doing. Even changing the pinion seaseal can damage the pinion if not done correctly. It takes someone familiar with differentials.

Hi, How do I contact Joe Santana? I would like to talk with him and get his advice. I do want to do the rear end right the first time.

Thanks, John Verity

Hi, there is quite a capable driveline specialty shop here in Boise. I could remove the axles and remove the pumpkin to take to them, along with the correct parts.

Where should I look for parts?

Thanks, John Verity

You won't know what parts are needed until your shop completes an assessment. After they tell you what's needed, Packard-specific parts from Kanters, Max, Patrician Industries, among others. Bearings from them or any good bearing store or if something unusual, Olcar Bearing in NC.
