There isn't enough room in the recess to drive the old seal in further and put the new one on top of the old? Seems I've heard of that being done rather routinely when the old seal was difficult to remove.

Owen_Dyneto - The current one is flush with the trans housing - wouldn't want to try without knowing there's room behind it

You can use a socket of the appropriate size to try to drive the seal in further. If it already bottoms out (ie multiple seals already in place) then you'll know pretty quickly as it won't drive any futher in.

Here is a series of pictures that show what should be behind that seal. As the manual describe you have to tap the lever to push out the seal. There is a washer and a locking clip behind it. It possible if someone drove in another seal crooked it is wedged or metal-clad seal that it is rusted in place. So maybe some predator and a over nite soak may help.

I've been soaking it in acetone/ATF, which always worked on rusted bolts for me in the past. Going to give it another try tonight. Not a lot of room to tap without pulling out the control assembly - afraid if I pull that out I'll never get it back together again.
Thanks for photos, that helps a lot What's predator?
