Hi JCH,
I'm sure those who know a lot more than I do will weigh in here, but I removed the steering box on my '39 and the gear does not come off the steering wheel rod - it is integral and must go with the steering box to wherever it is going to be rebuilt. I too thought mine should come off, but was quickly tuned in by the pros on here, that it does not. I am guessing your unit would be the same?????..... Chris

If I remember correctly the gear does not come off the shaft, will look at one on Wednesday and let you know for sure. Suspect another member will chime in before I can look.

The worm gear on the end of the steering shaft does not come off. At least not under normal service parameters.

Thanks to all on the steering gear box. I did have to remove and ship the entire 5 feet assembly. Thanks, JCH
