The Detroit News posted an online photo essay of Gar Wood's boat racing highlights over this past weekend.

Gar Wood's last race boat, Miss America X, is now on display at the Packard Proving Grounds courtesy of her current owner Henry Mistele.

Gar Wood has a long history with Packard and breaking world's records. His Miss America IX, with 2 Packard engines, was the first boat to reach 100 mph and Miss America X, with 4 Packard engines, was the first boat to reach 120 mph - eventually setting an all-time record of 124.91 mph.

It was a long distance racing boat and had a 300 gallon fuel tank.

Does look like a rum-runner would have liked to have gotten his hands on it though!! Love those classic old wooden boats. Sail or power, there is sure a mystique to the age of wood. Chris.

I've long admired the boats Gar Wood built for public consumption. A double cockpit runabout from the late 30's to early 40's is on my bucket list. If the Chrysler inboard is missing I thought it would be neat to find a Packard marine S8. I don't think a triple will ever be in the cards for me but they were incredible boats.

The annual Keels & Wheels show in Houston (Clear Lake near NASA) provides and excellent opportunity to see some outstanding wooden hull boats. Oh, and there is always a nice display of motor vehicles too. JWL
