Ross has more experience than I on these filter cartridges and would take his advice. The 1006 cartridge fit the filter housing and was a match in size to the one it replaced. John

The original oil pressure gauge and the auxiliary oil pressure gauge usually agree. I generally go by the auxiliary gauge because it's a lot younger than the one in the dashboard!

As to the 1006 filter, John used to own the car before I bought it. He recommissioned it. He documented it beautifully. The pictures he showed of the filter pertain to that recommissioning. Evidently a previous owner had put on the V8 oil filter because it is larger. That is why there was a 1006 filter showing in the picture. I have the original oil filter but I have not reinstalled it because to me the V8 oil filter makes a lot more sense. So, I use the 1006 on this particular engine. And I think the previous owner whoever he was for putting on the larger oil filter.

The oil filters on our cars may not be the ones originally specified or fitted. They could be after market or from somewhere else. Cartridges need to fit the housings.

Please note that Packard originally recommended 20 W oil for our cars. Please see the picture here.
If the engine is in reasonably good shape, it would be best to stay as close to the original viscosity as possible. When the engine is hot, the oil flows best to all the components. So many experts recommend to stay as close to the viscosity at full temperature as the original oil. It is oil flow (movement) that gives the best lubrication. See the graph here that shows viscosity comparisons of straight weight oil to multi-viscosity.

Viscosity chart was an eye opener.
BTW, I took the car out Sunday morning and at 65 MPH it was holding a steady 50 LBS of oil pressure. With the OD there was no strain or hesitation in operation of the engine. Thank you Packard for your engineering skills!!
