With view to the 1A-2775 24 cylinder "X" engines I stand correct. It would have been better to take a look in the Master Motor Builders by Robert J. Neal.
One of the two "was given by the Navy to the Smithsonian in 1971" [acc. to wikipedia]. [pictures sources: enginehistory.org]

Thanks for all the pics and info. Guscha, I did access the links for addl info and the link for the previous thread here on PI. The politics and back stories are interesting but the engine developement,HP ratings and time line are of particular interest, The ref to the hard covers are welcomed.

"dry sump..." Yes the oiling system would be of interest. On the "X", Im wondering why they did not turn it 90 deg. Seems to me there would be a packaging issue. Those cyls on the bottom force the shaft to exit very high! I thought low profile and center of gravity as well as minimizing draft depth were paramount in perf applications. Turn it 90, conv sump and oiling. The diabolically opposed boxers have been running that config for decades.
As for the liberty- are those twin spark plugs I see in the drawing in the sides of the cyls ?

The ref to the hard covers are welcomed.
"Master Motor Builders" is fascinating if you are an engine guy. It's a big book. Be prepared to be fascinated for a while. Those cyls on the bottom force the shaft to exit very high! The X engines were designed as aircraft engines, so location of the output shaft on the fuselage centerline would be ideal. "Master Motor Builders" has a couple pix of the Schneider Trophy planes the 1A-2775s were built for. are those twin spark plugs I see in the drawing in the sides of the cyls ? Yes, twin plugs, standard practice for aircraft engines. Looking at the pix I posted of the PT boat engine at PPG, you can see the plugs clearly in the pic I took looking down the valley, and you can just see two of the plug wires for the outer plugs in the exterior shot of the engine. The wires are right under the exhaust manifold, the round pipe along the side of the engine with a round plate bolted over the end. Hall-Scott engines also had dual plugs, decades after they exited the aircraft engine business. Here's a pic of what appears to be a Hudson built Hall-Scott Invader, 6 cylinder OHC hemi marine engine. Distributor in lower left corner of pic. Attach file: (17.90 KB)

Apparently, according to Bob Neal's book, only 2 1A- 2775 engines were built, one in 1927 and another in 1928. A 3rd, a 2A-2775 was built in 1935. Apparently the only larger (in cubic inches) engines Packard built were the 1A- and 2A-5000 engines of 1939.
