I do believe he forked over the cash for some of them though. I found some stapled together in the service manual I have.

30 cents a page back in march of 1967, he acquired 6 pages
then in May 1967 another 68 pages from the 1956 supplement to the regular 55 service manual. a fair bit of money back in those days, that doesn't even take into account the monetary exchange of that time.

A fellow by the name of Arthur Rasmussen of the Packard Automobile Classics Tec. committee sent them it looks like

So I rented an ozone generator to try to reduce the stink in the car, worked fairly well. will probably need another treatment later on. inspected and re-taped the limit switches on the compensator, put in a new bearing and worm gear also before repacking,(thanks Ross)
purchased new solenoids, then installed. found a service letter after saying they should be turned so the lip is not pointing up so will have to change them around.
the replacement compensator lever should arrive today.

in the process of scraping crud off in an effort to remove the transmission and oil pan. the service manual says to drain the converter but I am am having trouble seeing up into that area.

when scraping up around the transmission I found these orange wires buried under the crud. where do they go or come from?

the exhaust manifold heat control valve is toast, will need to find a source for a replacement

If the car has a pushbutton shift the orange wires would go to the pressure switch. That switch would be a round can approx 2" in diameter and an inch or so thick having two bullet type female terminals on the end. It is located on the drivers side of the transmission case about in the middle and above the shift actuator. If the wires were disconnected the pressure switch was probably faulty. First symptom of a bad switch would be a failure to start the engine in P or N because the start relay would not close to pass the start signal from the ign switch to the solenoid. It was designed as a safety to prevent accidental selection of park, neutral and reverse via the PBs if the car was going faster than 5mph.

The access plate on the bottom does not give a lot of room to do much but it is possible to get to the drain plugs thru the opening. You may need to rotate the converter slowly to be able to see the plugs as they move quickly past the open area. Loosen one plug to provide an air path and rotate the converter another 180 to remove the second plug for the drain. Just don't forget to tighten both of them when the converter finishes draining.

On the heat control valve, used are out there but good ones and NOS are getting harder to come by unless you are in the right place at the right time. Packard used an odd diameter and configuration to fit inside the manifold and exhaust pipe. Along with a different spacing for the bolts, to be best of my knowledge no one has found a modern inexpensive and easily available valve that fits.

Exhaust heat riser valve should be easy to source, I recently sold my NOS unit to Bob's Packard Parts in PA where it is probably still available.

Daddy.o.

I left my heat riser out. Up in your area maybe you need it. I think it's a debatable topic. If so I'll be racked.

Brake switch I have the relay type. But I'm thinking going soildstate. If I can find a 5 pole. Cheap.

The VW type. Everyone I used stop working. And threads are mm.

The 2 pole. There is a racing one that holds more amps.

I use silicone brake fluid . no problem.

Had Ross rebuild mine that rebuilt in the 80s. Cleanest unit he's seen. And it really didn't need a be build.

Riki thanks
I have found a place in Ont. Canada that will rebuild the BTV John Stuart. am planning to go with the 2 prong and the relay me thinks

know any sources for replacing the starter solenoid plunger dust boot? steele rubber says no luck.

Check with Pete in Langdon, AB for a heat control valve and possibly the pressure switch.

I think it might because with the end collapsed inward for the linkage it looks very similar. The basic Delco solenoid and pinion shift starter were standard items and also used on several GM cars. I believe only the nose casting was different for the Packard bolt pattern.
