For the rheostat to get that hot plus what happened to the rheostat and the intermittent failure of your original switch would make me suspect a wiring issue with your dash lights.

I would check 8 sockets and the wiring to them . There are 4 in the cluster, 2 on the vent controls, 1 at the ign sw and 1 at the PB assy. On the PB bulb, check that socket too and that the wire did not get pinched in the steering column or by the pod halves when screwed back together.

Have seen several instances on other cars where insulation on the center wire has shrunk or pulled back allowing the now bare conductor to intermittently touch the grounded shell.

H.

I'll look at that. Cause I was seeing if the pb light was on. With the headlight switch. I was turning the knob. And it started smoking. It wasn't.

Then...dead short.

Call me fingers

Picked Packard ignition switch.

Now the essay part.

File key so those points are down. That's what was holding it up

My plan is to put diode on hot wire. With possible capacitor.

Because there is still going to be a chance for a spike with the relay contacts.

And a capacitor across those points might help.

Not going to remove ballast resistor ..

Going to hook this up. So ign switch flips relay and power igniter .12v. Thru relay .

Still thinking where to get 12v for igniter. And add diode.

Could do it all from ignition side of ballast. Which would be off when key is off.

Grip.

Only 1 screw holds plate.

Grip..

The wires should come from the right.

So. Wires are silicone. Flexible. But . leave cap off till wires are connected. Cause you'll need to make sure they don't rub
