While Stalin's Packard IS a 1937, the car pictured in the article is a 1939.

I realize that that is not a photo of the Stalin Packard. I have the one that was posted on ebay, but I don't have legal authority to use it in my book.
I am aware of the controversy of ownership. Back in 2012 I was in correspondence with the Northern Illinois Auto Theft Task Force and did not know if it was still at the museum in Roscoe. I understand they were closed last year because of Covid. I am trying to reach out to them now, but have not heard back. Bob

If you are in possession of stolen property you have to surrender it.
I know of a few stolen classics and they haven't seen the light of day in decades. Who knows where they are now.

How does that work when you legally bought it and there was no way of knowing it was stolen? How can you get your money back?

How does that work BDC, for a legal deal it needs two parties, a buyer and a seller. A seller is someone, who is allowed to transfer property. Moscow 1940, heavily armored Packard in service for uncle Joe (e-mail me for a high resolution pic). image source: AMO-ZIL car museum Moscow

Thanks for the offer, but that picture is of a 1936 Packard. I am focused solely on the 1937 Seniors.

One of the most rigid rules of personal property is that the buyer of stolen property can only look to the person who sold it to him to recoup his expenses.
If the item was sold through eBay.the purchaser may be protected by their Buyer Protection Policy but there may be limitations or exclusions. If the Seller is solvent and still in existence, there may be a valid claim made for refund but as between the owner and anyone who bought the stolen item...the owner prevails. There are tons of claims outstanding against museums and private collectors who ended up with art confiscated by the Nazi’s and fortunately many of the claims are honored. One major exception is the British Museum which has refused to return the .Rosetta .stone or the .Elgin Marbles ..or much of its collection. LOL
