I used an STP SA192 filter element to convert the oil bath type air cleaner to a modern pleated paper type in my formerly owned 1955 Clipper Super.
I used the top of an Edelbrock after market air cleaner to secure the top of the SA192. A short nipple held the top of the Edelbrock top in place when the top of the original filter top was tightened. In the first photo the more shallow filter element is the one that came with the Edelbrock. I did not use this one, nor the bottom plate that came with it. No cutting was needed. I saved the center part of the original in case a future owner wanted to change back to an oil bath. Maybe the photos will explain it better. One of the photos is a bit fuzzy, but should show well enough all the pieces used. Attach file: IMG_0001.jpeg (42.21 KB) IMG_0002.jpeg (23.37 KB) IMG_0003.jpeg (38.07 KB) IMG_0004.jpeg (29.50 KB)

Which begs the question, why? The original oil bath air filter is effective and doesn't clog up relatively quickly like a paper element does.

I agree, an oil bath air cleaner is most effective.
I convert because I do not like the time, effort and mess in cleaning and servicing an oil bath air cleaner. Granted, it doesn't need to be done too often, but when it is time it is a job I'd rather not do. Many like to do this servicing because it is part of keeping the originality of the car alive. I can't argue with that. I always do the conversions so that the air cleaner assembly can be restored to its original function should a next owner prefer. No cutting or permanent modifications.

I agree.
But having air flow problems. The only way to get to that jute is to cut the can open I kept getting stuff out .. So unless you can see. What's up. Bad design. Where to get replacement jute?. I would prefer stainless mesh.. Easy to clean.. Cant clean that jute. It just falls apart.. I'm thinking a bunch of stainless scoring pads. Pull them apart.

The jute or stainless material is supposed to be rinsed out in kerosene once in a long while and pan cleaned out. I've not encountered one where the media was falling apart and don't know why it should unless it was abused.
The advantage of oil bath is that they will run a long time with almost no restriction in airflow, which doesn't increase as they get dirty. They just keep accumulating dirt/sludge in the bottom of the pan. Paper gets more restrictive as they clog up and have to be replace relatively frequently but it's certainly a less messy task. The paper filters are considerably more costly. (Some in newer cars are an outrageous three figure cash cow for automakers, only available at dealers.) Some large industrial and agricultural equipment still rely on oil bath filtration but some have gone to centrifugal prefilters with paper secondaries. That takes up a lot of space and for that reason isn't so practical for automobiles.
