51-54 or 55-56 mirrors?

Someone check me on these, are these 55-56 Mirrors? Or are they 51-54 ones?

The base has a bit of a curve from front to back to perhaps match the door?

It also has the special screws.

I know there is a difference and before I list these on eBay, I want to make sure I list them correctly.

The 1955-1956 mirrors has a steel base that screwed first to the body, then the mirrors attached using special screws tightened using an Allen key through a hole. However, in order to work with the steel plate, I would expect the cast boss underneath would have to be recessed but on these it is not, so I expect they are the 1951-1954 type.

The photo below shows what happens if trying to use the 1951-1954 type with the later mount plate - it doesn’t work! 1951-1954 mirrors did not use a bracket with the mirror attached through the belt molding instead of to the door or fender.

Here is a close up of the bottom.

These, I believe, are Jay Fisher reproductions.

Kev,

The mirror on the left in your first post is for 51-54. Notice the little pin protruding down from the tail end of the base. Factory instruction show that you have to drill a corresponding hole in the belt molding. This keeps the base from rotating. 51-54 mirror does not use/need any sort of bracket.

Meanwhile, the mirror on the right is for 55-56. Not only is that little pin machined flush, but the socket for the mirror head is cut more squarely.

Anyone who uses a 51-54 mirror, with the mirror socket machined on an angle, on a 55-56 door body is only gonna get a view of the pavement.

Brian, it may just be the angle of the photos. But, they are both identical with a small protruding pin and the same shape throughout.

Then both are 51-54.

Some 1951-1954 mirrors had a little hole at the tip of the bullet-shaped head forward of the mirror which at first I thought was an indication of the year as most 1955-1956 mirrors I’ve seen do not have it. However, I have since seen 1951-1954 mirrors without it too so probably indicated a different manufacturer.

As I and other stated, yours are both 1951-1954 mirrors. Are those for your 1954 or were you planning on selling them?

They are already on eBay. These are Jay Fisher's reproductions that were made before he retired.

I pulled these out of an estate I was picking. But the pre-war convertible parts I need are getting expensive, so I need to let these go to help fund that project.

A pair of mirrors from some of the vendors now go for nearly $1500.

The pair I listed is cheap by comparison, but I hopefully get a little more as I have some pricey parts to buy soon.

Yes, the reproductions are very expensive! I opted for an excellent near-perfect used pair from Merritt for less than half your starting bid.
