Auction report - Mecum Indy 2023

This street-rodded 1939 120 Opera Coupe sold earlier today for $132K. The original straight eight was swapped out for a Chrysler Hemi V8. Car was a 2019 National Street Rod Association (NSRA) award winner:

In contrast, this 1942 120 Convertible Coupe hammered for only $58,300. Although the auction brochure states that it is a 160, it is actually a rebadged and retrimmed 120 and still has the original 282 CI Eight. This car was a no sale at the Sotheby's Hershey auction last October. I saw the car there and it was a nice older restoration.

1954 Caribbean brought a high bid of $62K but did not meet its reserve. It was described as an older restoration. Not sure about the chrome palm tree someone placed on the front fender next to the Caribbean script lettering.

This Matador Maroon 1953 Caribbean, a 2010 AACA Senior National First Prize winner, was also a no sale. It brought a top bid of $57K:

1951 200 Deluxe Sedan sold for a very modest $6,600.

Beautifully restored 1953 Convertible looks like a real bargain as it sold for just $26,400.

1956 Caribbean was the top Packard seller for the auction at an astounding $154,000. Car was frame off restored in the 1990's and is a multiple award winner, including an AACA Grand National Senior in 2014.

1950 Station Sedan brought a high bid of only $42,000 and did not meet its reserve. This appears to be a very nice example of this model.

1949 (22nd Series) Deluxe Eight Club Sedan with a concours level restoration was also a no sale at a high bid of $35,000. Probably the best example I have ever seen of this model. Car appeared in the 1985 romantic comedy "Mischief" starring actress Kelly Preston.

1942 Clipper 180 Touring Sedan. Fully restored; CCCA national award winner. One of only two of this model known to exist (Body No. 1522). Sold for $55,000.

There is one Packard remaining to cross the block (a 1953 Caribbean). I'll update this report once I have a result.

The auction description reads: "The most expensive Packard model offered in 1942."
Is that true? How about a Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Limo, not to mention a Custom Super Eight One-Eighty All Weather Cabriolet by Rollson or a Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Limo by LeBaron? And I miss A/C to be the most expensive Packard model offered.

Interesting, the 53 caribbean has additional hood props, looks like gas charged things. Interesting idea since you almost need two people to open the hoods on these cars.

The 1949 Club Coupe Sold at RM Auburn Fall in Sept. 2021 for $20,350. The seller must have made some improvements? No sale at Mecum Indy for $35,000.

the 49 club sedan is beautifully done, but the Packard houndstooth cloth is three shades of tan/brown, no maroon in it

Final Packard of the auction was this 1953 Caribbean. It brought a high bid of $80,000 but was a no sale as reserve was not met. Ad states that the car's color is Matador Maroon which was one of the available Caribbean colors for 1953. But the color does not look quite right. It looks more like Candy Apple Red to me:
