Any ideas about the clutch return spring mentioned above? I see nothing but air to connect it to so obviously there is something I’m not seeing that is either missing or is there but not where I am looking!

Sorry Don, I've never seen the underside of a manual 51-54 so I have no idea where the springs would normally attach.

Nice progress though.

The spring has a long straight end and seems to run parallel to the engine. Wondering if the bracket could have shared a hole with a motor mount to block bolt or is that too far forward?

Kevin, I’ve seen many but that was long ago!

Howard, that’s an interesting thought. The parts book plate seems to show it on the chassis but that’s not really clear and mounting to the engine would make more sense. Maybe I was looking in the wrong area by focussing on the chassis so when I go back out this afternoon I’ll have a look on the engine itself.

Getting ready to close up the shop as I’m leaving Thursday but a welder is coming by this afternoon to see about the broken gas tank’s t-bolt. His welding equipment is portable including his own generator so power won’t be an issue but having the tank in place now will make things tight for the work.

I believe that the rear tailpipe hanger is arriving tomorrow too!

Howard, no luck there. If the clip were on the engine, the spring would have to run at a considerable angle and it did not do that before. Looking up the group number that points to the anchor piece just gives the part number for the spring so no help there either.

The gas tank bolt has been re-welded and is holding well so far although the tank is still empty so we’ll see another time what the extra weight does. Oddly, the strap on the left side anchors to the frame farther down than the right side so make the threads a little too short so I had to add a spacer behind the nut.

The rear tailpipe hanger arrived this morning and is now installed too but not tightened which is why it is at a slight angle on the frame. There are two holes in the frame: one for the bolt and the other for a nub in the bracket to keep it straight but without it being tight the nub isn’t being pushed into its hole.

Don, I found this photo in the transmission section of SM. If you have a real manual instead of the reprint the photo might be better but to me the spring looks as if it mounts somewhere on the engine block or on something attached or very close to it.

Thank you, Howard and it does look like that in the photo. It seemed such an odd angle when I was underneath that I thought it not possible so I’ll have to look again next time I’m here. The shop is closed up now with the Patrician underneath so no longer accessible. I do have the physical shop manual (several copies) and service counselors so will check them all.

I’ve been looking for a 19-tooth speedometer pinion part no 412444 and found this in a box of parts. It is 19-tooth and it fits the speedometer cable but the number on it is unknown. The end of the shaft is flush with the gear which may or may not be correct so any ideas if this is what I need or not? There are apparently other 19-tooth pinions with different part numbers for earlier models but their numbers do not match either.

Anybody on the pinion?

In the meantime, I need to order battery cables which will probably be 00 ga to handle the two heaters and extra lights but I am not sure of the lengths or the size of the solenoid post. My notes have the negative length as 40” and the ground as 20” but these were just rough measured-in-place lengths from the existing cables in my 1954 Patrician. Does anyone have more accurate lengths?

Also, the parts book shows a single part number for the 1951-1954 negative cable even though the 1954s with the 359 had a larger post on the solenoid. That aside, any idea what the post diameter is on this 1951? I’m guessing 5/16” but maybe 3/8” so need to be sure.

And finally, is there a source for the 00 ga flat braided cable?

Ross or anyone else, any ideas about this speedometer pinion? I’ve been looking for a 19-tooth pinion for this transmission but as far as I can tell the number on this one doesn’t match any in the parts book. Any ideas what it is and can it at least be used as a placeholder until I find the proper one? Mine should be 412444 for overdrive with the 4.7 rear end.
