Not the easiest thing to photograph for sure! Fortunately I don't have my front seat in yet so I can get the camera and my body contorted to shoot up in there, even so there is a lot going on.
Try to peer through the forest of wires, cables and vacuum lines and you will note on the top left area that there is a spring hung from the bottom side of the dash and it attaches to the cam arm of the vent door at the end of which is a hook to secure the spring. This exerts upward pressure on the actuating arm to hold the mushroomed boss into the desired detent on the cam arm controlling the vents position. Hope this helps. (My actuating arm was quite rusty so instead of the proper chrome, look for a black one angling down from centre to bottom right. It is in the full open setting) Bob J.

Thanks, Bob. Believe me, I understand the pain of getting under the dash. I spent a good part of yesterday contorted around. I still have some more to do to get the controls wired properly.
I still can’t see where the spring connects up under the dash, but this give me a good idea of where to look.

Once more into the breach...
On mine there is a tab of steel at the back of the vent on the bottom of the cowl that has a hole in it. The spring hangs from that. Bob J.

Okay…getting back to this.
Now that I know where the missing spring needs to connect, I need some help with the size of the spring. Can anyone provide general dimensions and force of the spring needed? Once I know, I can make a run to the hardware store.

Here is my best guess, measuring upside down with my glasses off as bi-focals are useless in that position!
Diameter: ~1/2" Spring coil pack length: ~3" End hooks: ~.75" (added to each end) Overall length hook to hook: 4-4.5" Wire Diameter: ~.060" That will give you an idea. It is better to have a bit shorter spring than long as it only stretches slightly going over the cam stops for each indexed spot. A long one can be shortened by re-bending the hooks too, so take the above dimensions as a starting point. Might be good to buy a couple as they are usually rather inexpensive, cheaper than going back and burning more gas! Good luck! Bob J.
