My Plastigage hasn't come in yet but I decided to pop one of the main bearings off to check the condition. Looks like there's some babbitt left on the bearing. For what it's worth, I measured a 2.5005 ID on the bearing with a bore gauge but who knows how accurate that is. We'll find out...

The shape of the HASH oil pan required a different pump and pickup, but AFAIK, the gears are the same. The '56 Studebaker Golden Hawk used the same pump and pickup as the Packards, but also had a flat bottom plate instead of the vacuum pump.

For future reference, here's some pics of the Hudson/Nash oil pump. Note the pressure relief is on the opposite side of the casting.

Also, on this engine I did not need to remove the lower flywheel cover to remove the oil pan. I'm not sure what is in the way on the standard Packard engine.

Ok so the current plan is:

- install valve guides as necessary
- hone the cylinders and install new piston rings from Egge
- install a new seals kit from MM
- oil pump modifications TBD

When my Plastigage gets in I'll check some of the bearings, but for now they appear good.

Thoughts appreciated.

If you're not replacing the pistons, be sure that Egge's rings with fit the stock ones. Otherwise you'll have to find NOS.

Thanks. The dimensions on their website match what's in the Packard specs book, except depth is not listed. I asked them for clarification.

For true, Packard used a piston ring thickness of.200” (SAE K-wall) Egge piston groove depths are cut for contemporary GM/Ford D-wall .185”.

The D-wall rings will work in a K-wall piston groove, but not vice versa.

Thanks Jack. I don't think Egge is even making 320 pistons anymore, but it sounds like whichever the rings are made for will work with Packard pistons.

I'll update when they get back to me.

I checked with Egge and the piston rings they have are .180 thick.egge.com/product/piston-ring-set-61/

They also told me they can make new 320 pistons, however they don't have any full sets in stock at this time. No surprise that they are not a very hot item.

How do you remove the oil pump on these? I already removed the distributor and the two oil pump cap screws. But it's not budging.

Also, is there anything special to testing the hydraulic tappets? I assume I just buy tappet pliers and follow the manual?

Most likely someone used Permatex. Just a tap sideways with a brass hammer is usually enough.

Visual inspection of the bottom surface is far more important than the pliers test. A lifter can test OK with the pliers and bottom be too worn to reuse.
