Have a serious coolant leak. It is coming out by the bell housing so I assume it is a rear freeze plug. Can this be done without removing the engine from the car?

The method you may need will depend on access around the plug in question, but I have done this on a Mercedes inline six by welding a bolt to the plug and pulling it out with a slide hammer attached to a vise grips.

If you don't have the space to get a good angle on it, it may not be possible. As you know you will need the access to drive the new plug in nice and square.
