another difference that doesnt seem to have been brought up is the rear brakes. In 55 you needed a heavy duty puller to get the drum off. In 56 the rear brake drums could easily be pulled off by hand like any other rear drum brake car from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s etc. I am not to sure if you would be the one doing the maintenance on your future purchase, but something to keep in mind if it would sway your opinion from one or the other.

This is true for Packard but it isn’t true across the board for other makes. For example, my three 1964 Imperials had the taper shaft and didn’t change to the flange type until 1965.

Interesting point but unimportant overall as a nice puller is not even $100 on Amazon. Oh, and the twin traction diffs in 56 can have the own issues regarding unobtanium parts. I imagine the regular 56 rear end is easy to maintain like the 55, but many of these would have had the twin traction option.
