I don't have any answers, but something else to think about is if the brakes are compatible.

I know a 54 Senior complete rear axle has been swapped under a '37 120 to go from a 4.xx to 3:54. The bolt pattern was the same 5x5. Obviously, you would now have to use the '54 rear drums and rear brakes. Also, the axle spring perches may need to be moved (cut, moved, welded), and depending on any driveshaft to differential spacing differences and u-joints, the driveshaft may need to be altered to match.
This is my plan for my 37 115C, where an overdrive would be a hard fit due to its proximity to the frame x-member and its adaptation to the cane shift.

Looks pretty darn similar though the leaf spring attaching bracket is noticeably a little different and I don't know on dimensions.

I thought about that. Briefly. Mix-n-match doesn't bother me. Much.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm kind of wondering between the 3.90 from a non-o/d unit and the '54 rear I have with the 3.54. All my big car axles are for o/d units, though, so I'd have to hunt one down somewhere, or at least the pumpkin contents. I'm guessing that you're looking for a little axle with the 3.54 for yours, then. I have the axle in my '54 limo, too. I unload all those and my scrap guy will hate me when he comes for the rust.

I see that!!! Lovely! Thank you very much. Have you become the website scouring guru? I can find stuff, but Google finds it better for me. I'm taking a welding class this fall, and a lot of those things - like changing attaching brackets - is all of a sudden a lot less intimidating. I'm thinking the big question might be the difference in overall lengths. It'll require a look-see. If the backing plates are the same and the brakes are different, I could put the '47s on the '54 axle. If they're different, I can cut-n-weld soo. I need to shop for a welder.

Just use the 54 backing plates and drums.

That would keep it simpler. It's all theoretical for the moment anyway, but more information is better than less.

It would keep it simpler but would require different wheels than the front.
