First, NEVER use a bumper jack other than for emergencies. It’s not safe and it damages the bumper. Second, ALWAYS use jack stands when working under a car. Never rely on the jack alone.

Missed the part on the bumper jack. Kaizer (to put it in young people speak), bumper jacks are a meme at this point. You should instead use a hydraulic dolly jack either under the rear differential, or under the welded assembly up front (blue arrows). Jackstands should be placed in pairs left to right on the car (top/bottom on the image) in one of the four pairs of locations indicated. If you are working on anything but concrete, you will also want to get some scrap wood and pile some planks at least:
- sideways under the main frame section on both sides.
- under the welded box assembly up front.

Note that it is ok and most convenient to place jackstands under the rear axle, except that makes it impossible to work on that assembly or the rear wheels/brakes as the the wheels cannot be removed when the car is lifted by the rear axle. (Not enough space in the fender.)

Example of the cheapest jack I would buy:harborfreight.com/automotive/jacks-jack- ... th-rapid-pump-slate-gray-70485.html

Jack stands here:harborfreight.com/automotive/jacks-jack- ... g-jack-stands-slate-gray-70594.html

You can also get jack stands on Facebook for cheap. Make sure to get some that can get the car at least a foot in the air or so... you will have to slide under that gap.

For lumber, just ask around... somebody works somewhere where there is a bunch of scrap wood. Pretty much any industrial business is throwing it out all the time from breaking down shipping crates.
