The switch plungers can stick and keep the switch open but a more common failure seems to be with the wires breaking right at the end where they are soldered into the switch terminals. The solder seems to run up the wire under the insulations and makes the wire very hard. Vibration or wire being pulled in a very tight and sharp angle does the breaking.

Which limit switches are you trying to use? In your picture I can see limit switches in the gearbox which means it is a 56 and the solenoids which are there in the 55. Did you hook up the 55 or 56 limit switches when you replaced the compensator? Also, which control box are you using.
