All units I have seen have 2 fill plugs, one for the main transmission and one for the overdrive. The overdrive unit will fail if it is run with low fluid, so be sure that both the transmission and the overdrive have the correct amount.

It should be obvious. If not, it may not have one, in which case I'd look at the service literature for specific information. It's is important that both units, OD and the main transmission, have the correct level of lube.

IDK your year but AFAIK in the parts book, all models of transmission have a fill plug and drain plug.
Check the parts list on the left.

The transmission fill plug is on the right hand side towards the rear of the housing, same side as the drain plug which is low down near the front.

I looked through all the photos that I took while working on my 1951's transmission recently and found this one which shows the transmission filler just ahead of the overdrive adapter plate.

Are they not internally connected fluid-wise?

No. The overdrive and transmission are separate and each has its own oil level which is why there are two separate fillers..
