Here is the write up from Peter. This write up is for modifications for an R6 or R9 transmission. I don’t know if there are differences to the procedure for the R11 as I will be installing.

Did a little more tinkering while I’m waiting for my shocks and springs. I replaced the rear axle bumpers. Clearly, the old bumpers never acutually got used. If they had ever been hit, the undercoating would surely have been removed from the bumpers. It was completely in tact.

I don’t recall who it was, but I know someone was asking about the rear bumpers the other day. I believe it was part of the discussion on BigKev’s blog about the front bumpers. Anyway, here is the old and new.

Good job on the replacements as the prodigals are probably hard by now even though they’ve been protected by undercoating. Just an FYI, intact is one word! It’s valid as two words (that is, each has a meaning) but it has a completely different, though rather nonsensical, meaning that way.

Yeah…thanks. I know intact is one word…just got in a hurry typing. This is why it’s always good to have someone else proofread your work. When you do it yourself, you tend to read what was in your head and not what is actually there.

Very true! I used to be the editor of NorCal PAC’s newsletter for seven years and definitely made my share and that was pre-computer where it was a lot more work to make corrections. As soon as is was printed they would jump out of the page at me. At least now I can blame auto-correct.

I got the plates for the leaf springs cleaned up and coated with rust encapsulator. Then, while the rear suspension was out, I gave the rear axle a cleaning and coat of rust encapsulator as well.

After that, I installed the new leaf springs. Having never done this before, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy and uneventful the installation was. The car does seem to be sitting level now.

My rebuilt rear shocks should be arriving from Apple Hydraulics on Monday. I hope to get those installed as soon as they arrive.

One of my "winter" projects is to pull my exhaust manifold and get it ceramic coated. I was planning on going with Jet-Hot based on the good results of others on this site. But last week, I had a shop come out and look at my car to see what they thought in terms of body and paint work to be done in the summer/fall of next year. While talking to him, he recommended a local company, Industrial Coatings. He's used them for many years and has had great results and has a very well respected shop.

So, I reached out to Industrial coatings and just received a quote from them. I think I'll be giving them a try. Here's the comparison:

Jet-Hot: "Extreme 1300" - satin black - $455 plus shipping both ways. Quoted 4 - 6 week turnaround (plus shipping time each way)

Industrial Coatings: "1300 - 1500 degree" - satin black - $200 plus tax....$218.25. Approximately 2 week turnaround time. Since this is "local" (about a 45 minute drive), my only other cost will be about 4 gallons of gas to drop off and pick up.

I agree with your decision, I used a similar coating on my manifolds and after 700 miles they still look as good as when I had them ceramic coated. Price was almost identical to yours too.

I won’t be doing my intake manifold (at least I don’t think so) as it appears to be in very good condition with the original porcelain coating. That said, I’ll know more about the actual condition once I get them removed.
