The 1951-1956 cars had the slide-out retainer but it doesn't actually pull out as such. It pulls out about an inch or so, just enough to release the handle which will then simply pull out from the belt molding. If you pull out the retainer too far and the handle won't easily come out, you might have to push it back in very slightly so that the opposite edge of the retainer doesn't catch anything on the handle.

Thanx for all the replies. I need to take the inner panels off the doors to get them re-upholstered. Seems like I should spray them with PB Blaster when they're off. Who has the repops?

Cheers,
Les

Reproductions of the door locks? I would buy NOS from Max Merritt. One of the other dealers is selling what they called NOS for the ignition tumbler but it turned out to be NORS so wasn't stamped with the key code as NOS would be. If you were to have a locksmith remove your ignition tumbler, then you could document the key code and have a key made from it that would also fit the doors.
