Please do use GL-1 in the trans and overdrive if you have it, but please use GL-4 in the diff.

The trans will shift much better with GL-1 in it, and the hypoid rear won't burn up with the GL-4 in it.

If you have a Delco distributor there's a little grease cup on that for the top bushing. Often gets missed because it's not very noticable and the top bushing wears out prematurely.

Keep an eye on the boot on your driveshaft, it may not be to flexible after sitting for a few years and might crack.

Keep an eye on your brake fluid level. If it start going down, but you don't have any visible leaks, it's leaking from the master into the vacuum canister and needs a rebuild.

As for the sneaky little grease cups, I did notice that and one on the back of the generator as well. Not sure about the boot on the driveshaft...do you mean an output seal on the transmission? Both universal joints are in good shape and took grease without any trouble.

I left the car on stands for a while after finishing brakes to ensure there were no leaks. I had a very small leak at the fitting on the front of the master which I was able to tighten and cure. Sat for a week and remained dry. This car does not have power brakes.

Took my boys to a show Sunday. The nine year old said "Maybe there will be some Packards there. I bet we'll see one." I bet him we wouldn't. Some nice cars, but no Packards.

I was referring to the ball & trunnion style like this, which my '53 with an Ultramatic has, but maybe this was only used with the Ultramatic? I'm still working on my Packard 101 course! LOL

It'll be fun to take your Packard out as there are not many at most car shows, especially for me up here in Alberta, where Packard is a less known brand. My car has the 327, and people assume that it's had a chevy engine put in it. Then I pop the hood, and they're like what's that!?!? LOL

Yes, those are Ultramatic-only.

The manual transmission takes up the play in the output shaft itself. Note the large splined area to the right side.

Not sure why they did not do this on Ultramatics as well.

That's an interesting set up. The car sat on jack stands for three or four weeks and didn't leak a drop of any fluid after a couple days of field driving and an oil change. I was very surprised! I'll keep a close eye on things after the first real road test to see if any leaks develop. Waiting on the radiator shop to call back with an update as there is a cruise in this weekend about 30 minutes away that I'd like to make. All I did this weekend was a quick light soap pad wash and move it so my wife could have her parking spot back. She didn't mind the Packard being there, but I really wanted to get it back on the ground and see how it cleaned up.

I am looking forward to it! Packards aren't common here at all either. Many muscle cars and trucks from the big three, a few MGs here and there, and of course shoebox Chevies and Model As, MAYBE a flathead Ford or two (I still have a flathead V8 Ford I brought home my senior year in high school but it needs a full rebuild) but certainly never any Packards. One of my neighbors has a nice '56 Chevy and a guy down the road has two Model As, the Packard has already gotten their attention and started some great conversations.

At my last job, I met a guy that lives about an hour and a half from me. When I mentioned the town I'm from he started on saying "If you're on 32 a couple miles north of the light up past the old service station there's a boy that has a nice clean older Ford pickup I've thought about stopping to see if he'd sell it..." he was talking about one of my trucks. I told the wife I didn't know that old girl would attract attention like that! The neighbor with the '56 walked over one Saturday and pointed at the Packard saying "What the hell is it? I can't figure it out from the road."

I love to tell them that my car has a 327 with a five speed. Then you open the hood and you can see their lips move as they count the sparkplugs from front to back.

By the way Matt-does your car have overdrive?

Those look like factory side mirrors, I'm jealous!

My wife is okay with the Packard being in the garage while I work on it, taking up BOTH our vehicles parking spots, but not when it's snowing!

Hopefully you get a call from the rad shop soon!

No oil leaks!?!!? Something's wrong!!!!
