53 Cavalier, thanks for the picture, it is an improvement over the scan of the manual.
In identifying the ports, remember that "left" as used in the manual is the car's left.
You may need to open the image to read the port labels.

This is helpful, thank you!

I've often thought that a good project would be to redo the manuals so they had new/clear pictures, and searchable text. A BIG project, but a little at a time and after a few years it would be done and good forever!

Good that you've been checking the right port, bad that you don't have any pressure. The plot thickens!

Ok I found a moment tonight to do the governor pressure test…. 0 pounds. I took the gauge off the transmission and ran it up to 50 mph… only a few drops of fluid came out….

Assuming that the passage to the pressure port is clear, either the governor has a problem or there is no there is no hydraulic pressure to it. The results of the other pressure tests will be interesting.

I wouldn’t even bother with another pressure test for now as the pumps must be satisfactory for the transmission to otherwise operate. I would go ahead and check out the governor. Once the valve is freed up and it’s back in, test the performance.

Yes but only on the Twin Ultras with the stupid tac-weld rear pump driver that they used. If that part breaks it can ruin the pump rotors. Or if you drive the car 200k miles it will probably wear out in that time.

If the governor is free with no obvious problem, then the rear pump is suspect. You can also check the areas corresponding to where the rear pump feeds the valve body and where the governor pressure goes to both. But with 0 PSI at 50 mph, something is seriously wrong.

It goes without saying that you need to double-check that you are assembling the governor correctly and that the valves move freely when oiled and installed without springs, as a test.
