If you mean the starter and solenoid are completely electrically dead, presuming you still have the stock gas pedal start the most likely issue has to do with how the start switch was installed back on the carb. With an Ultramatic, there is also a neutral safety switch on the transmission but that is not likely to have been moved so something could have been disconnected. If you converted to some type of button and no longer have the carb style start switch then you will need to trace wiring. Strange as it seems, a loose or dirty battery terminal connection can corrode or oxidize overnight to the point it will exhibit symptoms much as you describe when trying to supply the large starter current needed.
If you still have the carb start switch, here is a drawing showing the proper parts sequence installation along with a writeup Ross provided of how everything works and is adjusted. Note that item 2 must be installed with the longer lip down below the ball as shown If it was installed upside down, the ball could be out of position so cannot engage the starter plunger or a switch part could have been damaged. ![]() ![]() .

Maybe it leaked into the engine and filled the cylinders. To check, pull the plugs and have a look but if that did happen, you'll also have to change the oil as some would have definitely gotten in!
The other scenario is that the gas you ran it on wasn't fresh and put a buildup on the valves. If that the case, a head removal will be necessary to clean it all out which will mean removing all the values. I had that happen once on a 5-main 327 and the engine acted frozen when I had just run it the week before with stuff hardened onto the valve stems and totally seizing them.

Well I know it’s not gas in the valves or in the plug. And the tank was fresh no ethanol so it wouldn’t be that. But, thanks for your input.

You might be onto something. We tool the carb off and cleaned anything that showed any dirt or gunk. But actually it was fairly clean. Oh and yes it still has the gas pedal starting system still in place. So that is where I’ll head with your information.
Thanks

You can be pretty confident that your new issue has something to do with the work that you just did, at least that's how it works for me!
Assuming that the car has power and that this wasn't an issue before your carb work, I would start by making sure the carb starter switch is functioning. You could check it with an ohm meter. If you need to move your car you should be able to turn the key on and jump the starter.

Did you disassemble the carb starter switch itself when you were working on the carb?
